Checkers: what it is and how to play

Russian draughts is played on an 8x8 board: pieces move diagonally on dark squares only. Captures are mandatory, forwards and backwards, in chains. A man that reaches the far row becomes a flying king. You win by capturing every enemy piece or leaving your rival without a move.

Game modes

Online: press “Play online” and the game matches you with a player of similar rating; results feed the world and country rankings. Versus bot: several difficulty levels, handy for practice. With a friend: take turns on one phone or play by invitation. Checkers is free and runs in your browser without installing anything.

Tips for beginners

Keep your pieces compact and hold the centre. Before an exchange, check whether your rival can answer with a multi-capture.
